Propecia, also known as finasteride, is a medication approved by the FDA in 1997 to slow the progression of male pattern baldness (Androgenetic Alopecia). Propecia blocks conversion of Testosterone to Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). The rising levels of DHT in certain individuals can cause male pattern baldness, but by stopping the production of DHT hair loss may be stopped. In some, where recent hair loss has occurred, new growth may even be seen. Long term studies by Merck Pharmaceuticals showed a high percentage (up to 80%) of participants had stopped further hair loss and up to 6% had regrowth. In most cases, results were only seen in the vertex (top of head) and crown regions. Dr. Donath believes giving Propecia a chance in controlling your hair loss situation.
